Christmas Week Schedule 2014

Announcements - December 2013

Men’s Prayer Breakfast on December 6 at 8:30 a.m. at Seascape Restaurant in La Selva. All are welcome and bring a friend and introduce them to this wonderful fellowship of men in our parish. Location to be announced.

Paul Lee will lead Adventide reflections on the Incarnation on Saturday, December 14 from 10:00 am till 12 Noon in the Fireside Room.

The Evening Guild Christmas Dinner will be celebrated at Vi Gray’s home on Tuesday, December 17 at 5:30 p.m. Bring something to share. Contact Elizabeth Rible at 425-0861 for more information.

The next ECW meeting will be on Friday, December 20th at 10:00 a.m. Sarah Peterson and Chris Perrin found a wealth of old pictures in the attic. Sarah organized the slides on a carousel. We will view the slideshow in the parish hall and try to identify as many people as we can for the 150th Anniversary Celebration.

It’s also time for our Christmas “white elephant” gift exchange! In our version one doesn’t buy anything. Instead we select things we already own but no longer want, wrap them up for Christmas and mark each package with a number. Everyone gets a number and gets to choose a gift as the numbers are called. It becomes more fun as people get to choose a wrapped package or someone’s gift that has already been opened. You keep going around until everyone gets what they want or has had 3 turns to try. Bring one or two things, wrapping more than one gift allows others to play even if they forgot to bring a gift. For more information please contact Sally Green.

The Jesse Tree

A shoot will come up from the stump of Jesse; from his roots a Branch will bear fruit. The Spirit of

the Lord will rest on him – the Spirit of wisdom and of understanding, the Spirit of counsel and of
power, the Spirit of knowledge and of the fear of the Lord. He will not judge by what he sees with
his eyes, or decide by what he hears with his ears; but with righteousness he will judge the needy,
with justice he will give decisions for the poor of the earth. (Isaiah 11:1-4)

The tradition of the Jesse Tree comes to us from Europe. It is named for Jesse, the father of King David. God promised David that his Kingdom would last forever – and that through him and his seed God would save his people and bless the world. The “tree” is usually a branch or sapling. Our Jesse Tree at Calvary is at the entrance of the church.

The ornaments were made by our Sunday school children. Attached to each ornament is a Christmas wish from a local child living in foster care. Parishioners select an ornament and purchase the gift. The wrapped gift is returned to church with the ornament attached. The gifts are delivered to the children by Christmas.

If you are unable to buy a gift but would like to contribute toward a gift, I can shop on your behalf. You can put a check in the offering with the designation “Jesse Tree” in the memo line. Please return wrapped gifts or checks to church by December 17th.

Thank you,

Jane Prough
