I am very excited to announce that our newly expanded Scrip Program is active. Over the last two months, the fund-raising committee has been working to get the word out about this new program. We have been shouting from high upon the mountain tops, and by your response, we know we've been heard. The very first shipment of Gift Cards, from your favorite department stores, restaurants, gas stations and other retailers, arrived August 17^th. As you know, these cards are available to Calvary at a discount from the participating retail businesses, which allows us to sell them to you at face value and keep the proceeds for Calvary Church. As of the writing of this article, August 23^rd, you have collectively purchased $1650.00 worth of gift cards. In addition, there are orders for more than $1500.00 in card purchases pending. Not bad for being in business for less than a week. I want to thank everyone who has inquired about the program and especially those who have decided to participate. I urge all parishioners to look into this program and support our effort on behalf of Calvary Church. September 11^th, 2011 marks the 10^th anniversary of the attack upon the United States of America. In recognition of this tragedy, Calvary Church has organized a gathering, to mourn the loss of those who have gone before us, and acknowledge the valiant effort of those who have fought to keep us safe since. On Sunday, Sept. 11^th , two events have been planned to honor this date. Beginning at 5pm, we will gather to share a Spaghetti dinner complete with salad, bread and a choice of wine or non-alcoholic beverage. The dinner is supported by a donation of $10.00 for adults and $5.00 for children under 10. Following the dinner all are invited to attend a truly unique prayer and praise service at 7pm. We will process over to the Parish Church to experience the classic sounds of U2, Doobie Brothers, and Crosby Stills and Nash set to an engaging visual production. The music is being performed live by  the sensational Mike Hadley Band along with Jock and the Juggernauts. The evening is sure to be a must attend event for the whole family. Collection plate proceeds from this event will go to benefit the Calvary Outreach program supporting Santa Cruz homeless and families in need.

I would like to personally invite all parishioners to attend these events. On September 11^th, 2001, I like all Americans, was deeply saddened by the days events. As much as I grieve for those who lost their lives on that day and for the families they left behind, I too grieve for the thousands of soldiers and families who have lost their lives in battle since to keep us safe. The sacrifices made by the hundreds of thousands of young men and women in the armed forces and their families is a testimony to the strength and character of this nation. America has long been a beacon of hope; a great nation of promise in the midst of a world of injustice. Our nation was built on the premise that we are all created equal; that all people should have the opportunity to pursue happiness and justice. I feel strongly that Calvary Church, by its unique geographic location within Santa Cruz serves this same purpose. That we as a people of faith find ourselves surrounded by need. I am grateful that we have the opportunity to serve the homeless and those families in need through our outreach programs. For every person we feed, every family we give groceries to, all may be witness to the word of God through our actions. I hope to see all of you on September 11^th, to remember those who have died;  those who live and fight for our safety;  and for those who live among us that are in need.
