Music Notes for Sunday, June 4, 2023: Trinity Sunday

Preachers tend to dread Trinity Sunday because of its tendency to get bogged down in theological dogma. However, choirs like it because they get to sing “Holy, holy, holy,” a perennial favorite hymn, and the wonderful, though lengthy, “I bind unto myself today the strong name of the Trinity,” lovingly referred to by its tune name, St. Patrick’s Breastplate, with words attributed to Saint Patrick. Our anthem, “Prayer to the Holy Trinity,” by American Organist/Choirmaster and Composer, Michael Bedford (b. 1949), is a setting of a text by the composer with three unison verses in praise of the Father, Son and Holy Spirit, respectively, followed by a closing section wherein the same verses are heard in canon.

  • Offertory Anthem: Bedford, “Prayer to the Trinity”
  • Hymns: “I bind unto myself today,” “Christ be with me,” “Thou, who at thy first Eucharist didst pray,” “Holy, holy, holy”
  • Psalm 8: Pavlechko
  • Service Music: Rutter, Alm, Hurd
