Music Notes for Good Shepherd Sunday, April 30, 2023

The Fourth Sunday of Easter is known as Good Shepherd Sunday in consideration of the lections for the day, which include the image of Christ the Good Shepherd and the Twenty-third Psalm. Perhaps the world’s best known and most loved psalm, three different metric versions of Psalm 23 appear in our Hymnal; today we sing two of them along with other hymns that suggest the notion of God as a shepherd caring for his people. Other pastoral images are associated with Easter. Some are reflected in Christina Rossetti’s poem, “Spring Bursts Today,” (Easter Carol) which draws on language from the Old Testament’s Song of Songs, and which we sing today in a setting by Robert Powell.
