Music Notes for May 7, 2023, the Fifth Sunday of Easter

Today we reflect on Jesus’ words to Thomas, “I am the Way, the Truth, and the Life.” We sing Ralph Vaughan Williams’ iconic hymn, The Call, from Five Mystical Songs, “Come, my Way, my Truth, my Life.” Our anthem, Ego dilecta meo, by Ivan Moody, from his Three Songs from the Song of Songs, celebrates the pastoral, springtime theme of the Easter season.

Offertory Anthem: Moody, Ego dilecto meo

Hymns: “On this day, the first of days,” “Come, my Way, my Truth, my Life,” “Let us break bread together on our knees,” “Sing, ye faithful, sing with gladness”

Psalm 31: Pavlechko (St. Martin’s Psalter)

Service Music: Mathias, Hurd

Despite the somewhat darker and philosophical cast of our lections this morning, our anthem continues in the springtime, pastoral character of the Easter season. This is the prevailing mood of the sensual and enigmatically erotic Song of Songs, the Old Testament book whence our anthem text is drawn. The music, by English composer Ivan Moody (not to be confused with the American heavy-metal singer of the same name), sets chant-like melodies within rich, sustained, arhythmic harmonies. A student of John Tavener, Moody is also a conductor, musicologist, and a Greek Orthodox priest. He lives in Lisbon.
